A TRIBUTE TO SAO TOMÉ (1999)
The idea for this globe sprang from a simple question, if it’s better to be above than below, do we deserve to be at the top of the map of the world ?
Why do Australians place the South Pole at the top of their maps ? could this be due to an inferiority complex ?
I decided to put everyone on an equal footing with a small « extra » for Sao Tomé. It is a small island situated on the equator off Libreville in Gabon.
On plastic globes, it often disappears into the weld of the two hemispheres.
In this work, I have placed Sao Tomé at the top of the world, it was just necessary to put a little more weight at its antipode, without any fuss, just a slight shift to bring it into view.
